Preparing a Performance:
In the afternoon, we spent time working collaboratively to create a performance in preparation for our graduation ceremony on Friday. We can’t wait to show you!
Into University Day 2: Evolution, Adaptation and Inheritance
We had another fantastic day at Into University; studying for our ‘degree’ in Biological Science.
Studying Scientists:
We completed our research about a selection of eminent scientists (Rick Kittles, Rosalind Franklin, Charles Darwin and Mary Anning). We worked in our groups to produce an informative display poster to showcase our brilliant biographies. They looked really spectacular!
Camouflage and Mimicry:
In the afternoon, we had a visit from Becci Kinsella from the University of Leeds. She taught us about different functions of camouflage (prey evading predators and predators avoiding detection) and we were detectives trying to spot camouflaged animals. Then we learnt about different types of mimicry (defensive, aggressive and reproductive). We tested our skills at spotting mimics by completing a ‘Revels’ taste challenge!

Into University Day 1: Evolution, Adaptation and Inheritance
We had an exciting first day at Into University; studying for our ‘degree’ in Biological Science.
Evolution: we watched a video on ‘The Theory of Evolution’ and answered quiz questions about Charles Darwin. We also examined how fossils can help us to understand how living things change over time.
Adaptation: we discussed the meaning of adaptation and matched animals to their features. Using sentence stems, we discussed how different animals are suited to their environments.
Inheritance: we learnt how living things pass on their characteristics to their offspring and how DNA carries genetic information.
Studying Scientists:
We researched information about eminent scientists and conducted a ‘secret mission’ to produce a biography.
- Rick Kittles: an American biologist who specialises in human genetics.
- Rosalind Franklin: an English chemist and X-ray crystallographer who helped us to learn more about DNA.
- Charles Darwin: an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution.
- Mary Anning: a pioneering palaeontologist and fossil collector.
- We will be visiting Into University on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday to learn about Evolution & Adaptation.
- On Thursday, we will be travelling to Bolton Abbey to complete a river study as part of our Geography topic on Rivers.
- In English: we will be continuing to write our biographies about our chosen role models. We can't wait to show you the end result!
- In Maths, we will be practising our arithmetic skills and learning to use long division.
- We will also be trying out different balances as part of our 'Real Gym' unit in PE and starting our recorders lessons with our new teacher Ms Copley.
- In English: we will be continuing our topic of 'Biographies' and the children will choose an inspirational role model to research and write about.
- In Maths, we will be practicing using written methods for multiplication and division.
- We will also be learning about emotions in Spanish and finding out more about Moses in RE as part of our 'People of God' topic.
- In English: we will be starting our topic of 'Biographies' and looking at a range of biographies about different inspirational figures.
- In Maths, we will be learning about common factors and common multiples, as well as square, cubic and prime numbers.
- We will also be starting our 'Still Life' topic in Art and learning about risk and protective factors online in Computing.
Welcome to Year 6!
- In English: we will be creating persuasive leaflets for the children in Nursery to help them learn how to look after their teeth.
- In Maths, we will be using our place value skills to practice writing large numbers all the way up to 10,000,000!
- We will also be writing a class prayer in RE and starting our 'Rivers' topic in Geography.
- Thursday 15th September - class photos
- Monday 19th September - welcome to year 6 & high school application meeting (2pm in the hall)
- w/c 26th September - Bikeability
- w/c 3rd October - Into University focus week & Bolton Abbey trip
